These pelicans were waiting around the Scranton area to attend the Rise and Shine It’s Fishing Time, Scranton Kids Fishing Day Event but they will have to wait another seven weeks to attend.
Scranton Kids Fishing Day will be Saturday, June 1, from 11 am to 2 pm. It will again be held at the Scranton Pond Park just east of the viaduct. Ages of youngsters eligible for the event are from 4 -17 years of age.
Children must be accompanied by a fishing adult. Many people with a fishing license will be available to help the kids out as well. Parents can also buy a fishing license on line now from the Department of Natural Resources if they are planning on fishing with their kids.
This is not the free fishing weekend. Free fishing weekend is the next weekend but due to Bell Tower festivities, the committee has decided to hold the event a week earlier.
To be eligible for prizes, children must be registered by May 25 and be present in order to receive the prizes. Several door prizes will be handed out that day as well as a light lunch.
Registration forms are available a the H.F. and Maude E. Marchant Memorial Library in Scranton during a Summer sign up event on Thursday, May 16, from 5 – 7 pm. For more information, call Ashley Squibb 515-370-3505
Adults are invited to stop by to enjoy the free entertainment by watching the kids get so thrilled and flash big smiles. Meet some professionals and hear their message to the young fishermen along with a few surprises or two. Its a huge sea of kids, parents, and laughter. Oh yes, and a few fish or two for those lucky kids.
Donations appreciated – “We are trying to educate the kids in our area how to fish responsibly. The schools do not teach this and many parents don’t have the time to do this with their kids,” explained Leesa Squibb, one of the organizers. “It’s a day of learning and enjoying the out-of-doors. We will have area fishermen and some pro fishermen on site to teach the kids how to cast, bait, and practice catch and release of the fish.”
There is no competition: it’s only to enjoy and have fun …. We are asking for donations to help give a prize to each youngster who signs up so that they can start their own fishing experience with their parents and a friend to go along with them.
